Experiment Two- Week 3

EXPERIMENT TWO: THE SPACE BETWEEN

Theme

The theme of design is technology and for the multicultural students and staff who study or work at UNSW. The glass roofing of the building and structure show the sence of science and technology that give chances to become more environmentally friendly. Also, lots of recreational areas provide a good opportunity for students or teachers can have a rest or just chat there.

Concepts of Architects

Oscar Niemeyer:

  1. Using pattern/ repeating elements
  2. Clean structure: vertical/ horizontal forms
  3. Expressing the fluid material property of concrete through form
  4. Mirroring and rotating

Benedetta Tagliabue:

  1. A sense of movement
  2. Simple shapes and forms to create the complex styles
  3. Inspired by the nature
  4. The design of curves

Final Model in SketchUP

Just used very simple geometric to build this light rail follow the concept of architects, but create interesting shapes and details to develop the models created before.

Model in Lumion

The overview of the light Rail Stop.
The stop is on the ground floor that allow people to take the rail easily. The second and third floor provide the excellent place for people to have a space to chat and have fun. The glass roofing is inspired by Caterina Market designed by Benedetta Tagliabue to show the concept of movement.

The back view of the stop.
Oscar Niemeyer and Benedetta Tagliabue are all have the design theory of using simple shapes and forms to create the unique works. And Niemeyer focus on the contrast between materiality and forms that the form have a sense of mobility, but the material is massive. So I want to use simple and interesting structure. The almost transparent glass roofing have a strong contrast with concrete floor.

From this picture can see the baffle plate that I created. One of the design philosophies of Oscar Niemeyer is repeating elements for sense of continuation and uniformity and the afflatus of this pattern is form the Brazilian president's official residence in Brasilia designed by Niemeyer.

Texture used in the model.
I used the 'light' one on the ground floor to represent the idea of quick and convenient.

The 'Dark' texture is placed in the baffle plate that is match the train track

The 'medium' one put on the third and second floor to make the whole space more creative.
